Pat will first is play a song that corresponds with each of the three styles of songwriting that he’ll be teaching. For instance, there is a style of songwriting where every verse hangs underneath a thesis (i.e. ‘Tangled up in Blue’ by Bob Dylan). Every sentence corresponds and never veers from his premise. Other styles are more abstract, absurd, or even use a made up language (Bjork). There is storytelling, a linear method of songwriting (Don McLean). The list goes on. Pat wants participants to hear options and see if they gravitate toward a style.
